In 1809 when a Mr Richard Collins visited the Stormsberg district there were no Europeans in the Barkly East district, only Bushmen, it was then known as “Niemans Land” About 1859 the first white farmer came into the district. In 1866 one of the oldest farms, Glengyle, in the Wartrail area was given to J.W.Sephton and his descendants still live there. They came to the area of deep valleys and towering mountains as pioneers. This area was used by King Moshesh for his raiding parties from Lundeans Neck through Wartrail and Mosheshford to the present Transkei.
The climate is bracing, Winter is cold but beautiful sunny days. The Simmers are never too hot and Spring and Autumn a magnificent blaze of colours.
